Montguyon
Montguyon 'The Ville' was originally a medieval town, now it is a bustling market town, the castle ruins are still visited by many tourists each year. On the first Wednesday of every month market stalls line the streets selling fresh local produce. Montguyon also offers a wide range of local amenities including restaurants, bars, shops, bakers, butchers and banks.
Local folk festivals are held during certain times throughout the summer months as well as a fantastic medieval celebration held in July.
For those wishing to enjoy beach activities there is 'Beau-Vallon', a recreational lake with sandy beaches situated on the outskirts of Montguyon. Beau-Vallon offers free parking, clean water for swimming and boating, childrens shallow area for paddling, a childrens play area, restaurants and open air BBQ. A great day out for families with children or a place for adults and young adults to chill out.
Aubeterre-sur-Dronne:
At Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, you will find the monolithic Church of Saint-Jean of Aubeterre. This magnificent church was carved from rock by the first Christians. It is the largest church built entirely into rock in the whole of Europe. After your tour, why not take a walk along the banks of the Dronne or through the quiet streets and alleys of Aubeterre, which have antique and craft shops, bars and bistros.
Perigueux:
Founded over 2000 years ago, Perigueux is the Dordognes regional capital, with a mixture of both ancient and modern. Travel down the old cobble stone alley ways lined with boutiques and beautiful renaissance buildings. Visit the magnificent St Front Cathedral or take a trip down the river Isle.
Bergerac:
Take a leisurely stroll through the alleyways and squares of the old town, with their many half timbered and stone buildings which are a painters delight. You can take a boat trip down the river in a restored "Gabarres", a flat bottomed boat traditionally used to float barrels of wine down river to Bordeaux.
Angouleme:
The regional capital of the Charente, the old town is perched high above the surrounding landscape, and each night its buildings are magnificently lit. Known as the Festival City, each year it holds many large scale events from the "Strip Cartoon Festival" in January, the "Circuit des Rampart" in September, the only Vintage car rally held inside a french town, to the "Gastronomades Gourmet Food and Wine Festival" in November to name but a few. Music is not forgetten, with a great many events for all tastes, such as "Piano en Valois" or "Musiques Métisses". On the outskirts of the city is the "Nautilis" complex, with Sailing, skating and swimming in its Olympic sized pool.
Brantome:
Just over an hour away the charming town of Brantome is well worth a visit. This pretty town with its narrow winding streets is an island encircled by a loop in the river Dronne linked to the outside world by five bridges, which gives it the nickname "The Venice of Perigord".
The town and its impressive riverside Abbey shelter under crescent shaped cliffs pierced with caves which belonged to the Abbey or were used as troglodyte homes. You can explore the river Dronne by canoe or in a "rosalie" a pedal powered boat.
St Emilion:
Approx 40 minutes away lies the medieval town of St Emilion. Standing proudly on top of a hill overlooking the Dordogne valley. Its narrow, winding cobbled streets, with many pavement cafes and restaurants will enchant you from the moment you arrive.
It is an incredible open air museum, with it’s most surprising remains hidden below ground: the incredible monolithic church dug out of solid limestone and galleries covering about 150 acres. Above ground Romanesque churches and ruins stretch out along the steep & narrow streets. Guided tours of the Monolithic church, catacombs, & town are available daily.
The area around St Emilion boasts some of the finest vineyards in the world producing brilliant crimson coloured wines renowned the world over.
Guided tours of wine cellars & vineyards (in English) are available Monday to Saturday from the “Tourist information office”
The Bordeaux region is the largest and oldest wine producing region in the world, covering 113,000 hectares of Vineyards. Bordeaux wines are split into 57 Appellations. The various appellations produce different varieties of wines ranging from the Full bodied red to the sweet white.
Why not take a guided tour of some of the regions renowned vineyards, such as "Pomerol" "St Emillion", "Graves".
Within the Charente region, can be found the city of Cognac which is one of Frances most popular tourist destinations. Although Brandy is produced all over the world, only those produced here can be called Cognac. Famous distilleries such as "Remy Martin", "Martell" "Courvoisier" & "Hennessy" are located here and most of the them offer guided tours.
In addition, Pineau Charentais is also locally distilled. This is made by blending cognac with grape juice to produce a fruity aperitif. A must to try when visiting the area.Why not visit some of the traditional distilleries where these spirits are made.
Wine tasting is provided locally at the Chateau Margarite and the Vineyard of Pierre Follie.

The region of Charente-Maritime is famous for the quality of its waters and high levels of sunshine. The inland region is criss-crossed with waterways, rivers and streams which are a haven for leisurely fresh water fishing.
Bird Watching
With its numerous species of birds of Prey ranging from the Kestrel to the Eagle, plus some migratory species, the region offers a relaxing retreat for birdwatchers.
